Abstract

The composition of the fish fauna within an ecosystem is closely related to the type of habitats present as well as water quality of the particular ecosystem. The diversity of fish can vary due to changes in the environment. Fishes such as oreochromis, channa artd clarias are known to be hardy, as they can torerate polluted environments; others, such as probarbus jullieni, Acrossocheilus auratus and Barbonymus schwanenfeldii are restricted to unpolluted environments (Zakaria and Fatimah, 2oo2). The degraded habitat of riverine ecosystem may cause the endangerment of fish species (Rahman et ar., ntz). This study describes the fish composition near the mangroves of the Sadon g laya area. This chapter presents information on the fish fauna o? the sadong mangroves. Urbanization and intense human intervention were observed within the mangrove areas of Sadong |aya, factors known to resurt in stress, increase river pollution and environmental deterioration.
