Abstract

Veteran Mesej (VMesej) application was developed for Android users who have difficulties in using the messaging application. The illiterate and elderly user may have difficulty in hearing and poor vision. The purpose of VMesej is to facilitate the old generation in sending and receiving message via mobile phones. This study has two major objectives: (1) to enhance the messaging or chat application (2) to identify the guidelines on developing tools for the older generation. Author begins the project development by reviewing a relevant research papers to identify the guidelines for developing tools for illiterate people. Interviews were conducted with 10 elderly users'. The finding was used to develop the VMesej. While developing the application, four iteration were made whereas includes application design and function. After several times of changes, finally the application are been build and tested with targeted user. The user testing was conducted with two different groups of elderly users, literate and illiterate. The result of the user testing suggests that VMesej is usable and accepted by the literate elderly user. For the illiterate users, there are some of them who were unable to use the application because of lack of knowledge using the mobile phone.
