Abstract

The value of a firm can be associated with various measures. However, the standard of voluntary environmental disclosure is not a common measure to be taken into consideration when the value of a firm is quantified. The primary purpose of this dissertation is to examine the association between the quality of voluntary disclosure of environmental information (EDDICHO) and the value of public listed Malaysian firms in respect of Tobin's Q (TOBINQ), market-to-book ratio (MTB), and operating free cash flow (LOFCF). The EDDICHO in annual reports was determined by the means of dichotomous approach of word count based on a self-determined list of 12 environmentalrelated items. A final sample of 128 public listed Malaysian firms for year 2016 was studied. Annual reports and Eikon by Thomson Reuters were utilized to obtain nonfinancial information and financial information respectively. The findings of this dissertation illustrated that EDDICHO has a significant positive association with TOBINQ and MTB. The findings implied that a higher value of firm can be achieved by disclosing more environmental information. There were also mixed findings on the association between the value of firm and the control variables. For subsequent investigations on this subject matter, this dissertation recommends a longitudinal study.
