Abstract

Distribution of fatty acids in lipids extracted from the skins of Bornean frogs (Bufonidae, Ranidae, Megophryidae, Microhylidae, Ceratobrachidae, Rhacophoridae) were studied to determine the significance of fatty acids in frogs. Previous study on lipid composition of various fauna showed that lipid content of different species might differ from one another. The hypothesis of this study is the lipid content in frog skin is different among frog species. The main objectives of this study were to compare the lipid content of frog skin between Bornean frogs and to characterize the fatty acid composition in lipids skin from Bornean frogs. Lipid contents were extracted using Bligh and Dyer method while fatty acids were analyze and quantitated using gas chromatography. Various statistical analyses were performed on fatty acid composition using SPSS program. Tills study found that, the lipid content of Philautus tectus skin had highest lipid content and lipid content of frog skin was not directly correlated to body size. Based on distribution of fatty acids and by using Principal Component Analysis (PCA) the frog species were group into four group. Among all the fatty acids, only linoleic acid had a positive correlation with tlle body size of frog. It is recommended that more frog species should be collected in order obtain sufficient data to support the chemotaxonomy study of Bornean fmgs.
