Abstract

This study was conducted to study the lexical in the Iban language novel entitled ‘Panggau Pengerindu Tua’ by Dr. Adal Anak Adong. This study examines lexical by using lexical semantic approach to identify the type of lexical semantics for selected words as well as applying the Radial Network Category Framework Theory introduced by George Lakoff (1987) to examine the expansion of meaning for Iban words found in the novel. The corpus of data used in this study is based on the novel Iban titled ‘Panggau Pengerindu Tua’ for data findings and Iban-Malay Dictionary Second Edition for lexical definition derived from the novel. This study applies a lexical semantic approach to identify the types of lexical semantics found in the Iban language lexical selected from the novel. In the process of analyzing the novel, the researcher reads twice to ensure the reliability of the data used. In addition, to fullfill the objectives and further strengthen the study on the expansion of meaning in the Iban lexical, the Radial Network Category Framework Theory (KKJR) by Lakoff is also applied to describe the core meaning and the marginal meaning of a word. The results of the study found that the data obtained from the novel ‘Panggau Pengerindu Tua’ has already experienced an expansion of meaning from the actual meaning of the lexical. Overall, this study succeeds in unraveling the true meaning of words in the Iban language in more depth based on a linguistic point of view. The results of this study also found that there are 4 types of lexical semantics be the most favourite choice for Iban novel authors, such as synonyms, antonyms, hyponyms, and meronyms. The semantic approach along with the application of theory in this study can give good results towards the development of the Iban language.
