Abstract

This dissertation discusses the politeness of language contained in Warkah Pertama Rosli Dhoby. There are two objectives, namely to identify the characteristics of politeness of language contained in research material; and to analyze aspects of politeness of language in research material. The politeness theory promoted by Leech (1983) was choosen as basis for research. Leech (1983) has listed six maxims, which are the tact maxim, the aggrement maxim, the approbation maxim, the generosity maxim, the modesty maxim and the symphaty maxim. Warkah Pertama Rosli Dhoby was used as research material, and qualitative data analysis was used to get an effective result. This research will provide readers, especially the younger generation with information of politeness used by the community since the older generations. The results of this research found that Warkah Pertama Rosli Dhoby has a high level of characteristics of politeness.
