Abstract
Sarawak, one of Malaysia’s most multiethnic states, is applauded for its great tolerance and the racial harmony among its people. The leaders and people of Sarawak pride themselves in the racial harmony the state has achieved. “We in Sarawak can sit together in the same coffee shop enjoying our meals,” is a common statement used to highlight its people’s broad mindedness and respect despite differences in faith. What is the essence behind Sarawak’s success in terms of racial stability? Inter-racial marriage is one of the core elements in creating a sense of liberalism and trust amongst members from different cultures.
