Abstract

Dragonflies are insects from the order Odonata and suborder Anisoptera. Dragonfly wings are formed with a layer of clusters and enclosed with nanopillar structures that might particularly kill microbes coming in contact with them. As the particular bacterium such as Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Bacillus cereus (B. cereus) has become problematic due to their resistance to the multiple antibiotics such as ampicillin, penicillin, tetracycline and gentamin, the surface of the dragonfly could be an alternative treatment because the presence of sharp nanostructure on dragonfly wings has bactericidal surfaces that can rupture the bacteria cell wall. This study was conducted to identify the nanostructure surfaces of dragonfly wings. The detailed examination of two different dragonfly wings species which are Orthetrum sabina and Neurothemis fluctuans were done by using scanning electron microscope (SEM). In this study, the Orthetrum sabina wings was chosen and tested against two selected bacteria which are E. coli 0157:H7 and B. cereus that representative as Gram-negative and Grampositive bacteria. The Orthetrum sabina wings showed that it is effective to kill E. coli. Therefore, this study will potentially be used for designing new synthetic antibacterial surfaces which have benefits to be applied in industrial and biomedical field.
