Abstract

This study was conducted to identify the language selection of Melanau-Iban student in Sarawak related to their social interactions and factors that influence theirs language selection. This study was used to mix method for achieve two main objectives.To achieve the first objective (quantitative), the researcher has used the method of snowball sampling and analyzed it in the form of frequency and percentage to identify the language used in social interaction. For the second objective (qualitative), the researcher has interviewed which is the factor that influences the choice of student language. Researchers interviewed respondents and analyzed data using thematic methods. Findings for the first objective showed that 7 (46.7%) use Melanau language when communicating with mother, 6 (40%) choose to use Iban language with father, 8 (53.3%) use Melanau language to mother side family, 8 (53.3%) use Iban language with father's side family and 6 (40%) use Melanau language to communicate with their siblings. For the second objective, the data show that Melanau-Iban children have been influenced by environmental factors, dominant language and migration in making the choice of the language they use. This study is expected to provide a new perspective in the research area of the language selection of Melanau-Iban child in Sarawak.
