Abstract

The use of dictionaries is gaining attention not only among students and teachers, but also for those who wish to learn a foreign language. The aims of this study is to identify kelingkaran in Mukah-Malay Dictionary Melanaus Council (KMMMD). The objective of this study was to analyze the meaning of the meaning in KMMMD with Relevance Theory (TR) and to examine Melanau language students' perceptions of the meaning in KMMMD. This study is descriptive in combination with qualitative and quantitative methods. For qualitative methods, the researcher used corpus data KMMMD containing 8000 entries in total and analyzed based on TR. TR analysis is performed only on 19 entries that have an implied meaning when associated with the Melanau community. As for quantitative methods, this study involved 30 students who attended Melanau language classes at UNIMAS to avoid bias in the results of the study. They were asked to use KMMMD throughout the study session and outside of the first 5 weeks of the study session. In the 6th week, the questionnaire was distributed to the students to review their views on the issue of meaninglessness in the KMMMD. The results show that the students' views are the same as that identified by the researcher, and that the meaning of the meaning is inherent in the KMMMD. The researcher has also developed new definitions based on the TR framework for KMMMD improvement. Views and suggestions for improving KMMMD were also provided by the respondents as dictionary users.
