Abstract
This thesis aims to make comparison on performance and property between Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) and Portland Limestone Cement (PLC). The production of OPC emits large CO2 and are energy consuming, while the production of PLC is greener and environmental friendly. In order to find out the property and performance exhibit by both type of cement product, few test was conducted. For fresh state of concrete, the property of slump, temperature, vebe time and compacting factor were determine. For hardened state of concrete, compressive strength test, flexural strength test, rapid chloride permeability test was conducted. The test for fresh and hardened state were conducted for producing normal weight concrete and high performance concrete. The mix proportion on mortar mixes were determine at 2 part. First part is altering the w/c, while second part is altering the dosage percentage of superplasticiser. A feasibility study was also conducted to understand the cracking pattern on wall for both OPC and PLC. The fresh state of concrete by both OPC and PLC iin normal weight and high performance concrete are the same. OPC exhibit greater strength in compressive strength compared to PLC by 21% although the strength development were the same for normal weight concrete. The flexural strength for both OPC and PLC were the same. Rapid chloride permeability test showed that both OPC and PLC exhibit high penetration of chloride ion. For high performance concrete, the value of compressive strength at 28 days differs by only 0.4% between the two cements product. Although having the same strength development after 7 days, HOPC have faster rate of hardening compared to HPLC. The flexural strength for HOPC and HPLC are not much and deemed insignificant as both are above 5 MPa. As for the mix proportion on mortar, both type and cement exhibit the same progression of slump height and spread with variation of w/c and superplasticiser. The plastering ability on wall shows that PLC are better than OPC as less number of cracks were accumulated. Therefore, it is concluded that, PLC is best to use in plastering compared to other usage of construction work.
