Abstract
Cellulose derivatives play important roles in commercial applications such as fiber, paper and paint industries. However, cellulose is hard to dissolve due to the strong intramolecular hydrogen bonds. Ionic liquids (ILs) have received great attention as a solvent which can dissolve cellulose without risk to the environment. In this research, an ionic liquid with imidazolium cation and chloride anion was synthesized for the dissolution of cellulose isolated from paper waste. The ionic liquid synthesized and cellulose samples were characterized by using Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectrometer and Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) while the morphology of cellulose and regenerated cellulose were studied using scanning electron microscope (SEM). A green chemistry process for the production of regenerated cellulose using AMIMCl has been developed in this study.
