Abstract
A series of the chalcone related compounds have been synthesized with attaching to different types of functional groups namely hydroxyl, aldehyde and imine. The yields of the products were found can be increased when the amount of KOH and water increased in the reaction. In the last part of this project, the chalcone-Schiff base compound has been used for complexation with Fe(II), Co(II), Ni(II) and Cu(II), respectively. There are some changes found in the IR and 1H NMR spectra of the complexes compared to those in the chalcone-Schiff base compound, and it was very likely the amine nitrogen formed the coordination to the metal(II) centre. The conductivity studies showed that the oxidation states of all the complexes were remained at +2, and all of them are neutral compounds.
