Abstract

This study was carried out to evaluate the biological activity of Theobroma cacao pods against fungus, bacteria and cancer cell lines. The hexane, ethyl acetate and methanol extract of T. cacao were tested against brine shrimps (Anemia sauna) and the cytotoxicity was determined by LC50 value. The ethyl acetate extract of T. cacao showed the highest LC50 (less than 1.0 μg/mL) while hexane and methanol extract of T cacao exhibit LCso of 39.04 μg/mL and more than 100 μg/mL respectively. Each extracts were tested against Aspeºgillus fwnigatus, Aspergillus flavus and Aspergillus sydowii by agar well diffusion test at concentration of 10, 50 and 100 tg/mL respectively. Hexane, ethyl acetate and methanol extract of T. cacao showed positive activity against A. fumigatus, A flavus and A. sydowii. Disc diffusion test were done against Eschericia coli and Pseudomonas sp. and no inhibitions were observed on hexane, ethyl acetate and methanol extract of T. cacao pods against E. coli and Pseudomonas sp. at concentration of 10, 50 and 100 pg/mL after 24 hours. Hexane extract of T. cacao was tested against nasopharyngeal cancer cell lines at concentration 0.1 and 1.0 μg/ml, by Trypan blue assay. Hexane extract of T. cacao showed inhibition against nasopharyngeal cancer cell lines after 48 hours at concentration of 0.1 and 1.0 μ8AmL.
