Abstract

Composite materials undergo constant innovation and development to fit in almost any field as its characteristic are preferable than single-phase material. From simple household, industry and to aviation, trace of composite materials can be found. Natural fibre reinforced composite usage are in rapid growth due to increase in global awareness about consequences of plastic waste. Natural fibre reinforced polymer composites could reduce both inorganic and organic wastage while improving the mechanical properties. In this project, fibre extracted from Durio zibethinus will be studied. Durio zibethinus fibre are fabricated into fibre sheet and undergoes lamination to produce the composite. Meanwhile, this project investigate the difference between fibres extracted from Durio zibethinus skin and husk. In order to study the mechanical properties, tensile test and micro Vickers test performed on the fabricated composite. The study shows the tensile behaviour of composite fabricated from fibre of Durio zibethinus skin are at 20.05 MPa are better compared to fibre from Durio zibethinus skin and husk mixture at 19.43 MPa. Besides, hardness of the composites increase with fibre volume fraction. Further investigation via Scanning Electron Microscope shows that further chemical treatment can be done to increase the mechanical properties.
