Abstract

Bioethanol from non-edible source offers a better option to the biofuels industry in which the demand has risen drastically recently. As the demand for energy keeps rising, biofuels industry gained its popularity through the awareness of fossil fuels depletion. Yet, in order to fulfil the energy demand, biofuels industry actually has triggered world food crisis. Being a country rich in natural resources, Malaysia has lots of potential bioenergy feedstock. This project outlines the potential of indigenous plants that could be the new source for biofuels. Ubi gajah tuber, a cassava non-edible species has been chosen as the raw material for this study in order to investigate the feasibility of converting its starch into bioethanol. Ubi gajah’s substrates will be treated with different acid concentration (10, 15 and 20% v/v) at high temperature and pressure before fermentation process is carried out for 48 hours. The results revealed that ubi gajah pulp can produce more ethanol compared to its skin when both substrates were hydrolysed with 20% v/v sulphuric acid. 400 g/L of bioethanol were managed to be produced from the hydrolysed ubi gajah pulp meanwhile the skin has produced 390 g/L of bioethanol. Additional experiment was done to investigate the effects ethanol-diesel blends on the performance of diesel engine.
