Abstract

This study presents the fabrication of sugarcane bagasse by using urea formaldehyde as a binder and examine the effect of sodium hydroxide (NaOH) on the sugarcane bagasse. Two type of untreated particleboard were made which are by using extracted sugarcane bagasse and as received sugarcane bagasse as to determine the real mechanical properties of sugarcane bagasse as a particleboard. 3 types of NaOH concentration used which is 1%, 3%, and 5% as to treat the as received sugarcane bagasse. Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) used to identify the changes that occur on the surface of sugarcane bagasse before and after the treatment. After fabrication, flexural test and water absorption test done as to examine the mechanical properties of the particleboard. Mechanical properties of extracted sugarcane bagasse are higher than the as received sugarcane bagasse particleboard and, almost similar with the particleboard properties with 5% NaOH concentration treatment. This was due to more surface of cellulose interact with the matrix adhesion compared to big chunk of sugarcane bagasse of the as received bagasse. However, for the treated as received sugarcane bagasse case, the interface adhesion between fibre and matrix increased as the amount of lignin and hemicellulose decreased due the treatment. Then, allowing a strong interface to form between the resin and the sugarcane bagasse. The water absorption increased as the concentration of NaOH used increase due to the removal of lignin and hemicellulose which increase the amount of cellulose exposed and thus increase the water absorption ability of the fibre.
