Abstract

A total of 101 faecal samples were collected from five selected urban areas in Malaysia which are Langkawi, Selangor, Perak, Labuan and Sarawak. The taxonomic composition of gastrointestinal parasites present was described and the prevalence was compared between the five locations. The eggs of the gastrointestinal parasites were recovered by using flotation and sedimentation techniques. Result revealed the presence of ten nematodes, Ascaris lumbricoides, Ascaris sp. 1, Ascaris sp. 2, Trichuris trichiura, Oesophagostomum sp., Capillaria sp., Hookworm, Strongyloides sp., Physaloptera sp., unidentified nematode egg and one trematode which is Clonorchis sp. Comparison showed that hookworm had the highest prevalence in Selangor (33.7%), Perak (41%) and Labuan (44.9%), while T. trichiura had the highest prevalence in Langkawi (47.2%) and Sarawak (59.3%).
