Abstract

Loneliness is disagreeable feeling for every elderly person, especially the elderly who live in a welfare home where the elderly will feel empty and alone in daily life. The study was conducted to explore the causes of loneliness and coping conducted in the elderly in Rumah Seri Kenangan Kota Samarahan Sarawak. The methodology study used is a qualitative study with case studies with a partially structured semi-structured interview involving 5 elderly women. The results show that elderly people living in welfare homes are experiencing emotional loneliness that can disturb the emotions, feelings and social of the elderly. In terms of coping performed by the elderly that they use various alternatives themselves in reducing emotional loneliness with some activities that can be done by them with the ability of the elderly. In conclusion, emotional, physical, and psychological support is needed by the elderly because of the inner strength to form positive attitudes when dealing with emotional loneliness as well as support from the family is also the most important thing in the elderly to far away from the loneliness.
