Abstract

The diversity and species composition of butterfly (Lepidoptera: Rhopalocera) was studied in urban areas Kuching, Sarawak for 40 days and sampled by using an aerial net. A 1. 7 kilometers transect route was established within two sites of different urban densities. A total of 499 individuals from 24 species comprises of three families were documented. The overall total species richness and abundance reflected a declining pattern ofNymphalidae, Pieridae and Papilionidae from the urban edge to urban core. Species diversity index was higher at urban edge with Shannon diversity index H'= 2.291. The dominant individual was Junonia orithya metion represented by 94 individuals. The results revealed that urban edge yielded much higher number of butterfly individuals which was 315 as compared to urban core with 184 species. This study has two major purposes which are to observe the faunistic composition of butterflies in urban areas in Kuching and to as well investigate the species abundance pattern with increasing urbanization. Apart from that, this study also aims to investigate whether urbanization has adverse effects on the native butterfly community in term of species richness and evenness
