Abstract

Jerita tuai or folk tale is one of Iban community's oral literature. Many folk tales have been improved and adopted as written literature. "Raja Langit" is one of it which was written by the late Henry Gerijih and was adjudged the best written literature in the state of Sarawak. Adaptation study of Jerita tuai "Raja Langit", became" Kumang, Anak Raja Langit" as one of the efforts to improve the Iban literature a step further to the world of performing art by applying comique opera which was popular in the classical era. Methods used in this study are qualitative and quantitative. All samples taken from the popUlation were chosen at random. In an effort to produce comique opera "Kumang, Anak Raja Langit", it has come out with ,the composition of 34 songs, 19 dialogues, 6 traditional Iban music and 2 multimedia. From the study it shows, it was a successs (50%) and very successful (35.71 %). Application of comique opera to "Kumang, Anak Raja Langit" a success (75%). Presentation of message in the story (75%). Combination of Iban musical instruments with orchestra shows it a success (46.42%) and very successful (28.57%). Suitability of story and performance (82.14%). Efforts to expand and improve the Iban Written Litera~re a success (46.42%) and very successful (39.28%).
