Abstract

A study was conducted in UNIMAS peat swamp forest and lowland mixed dipterocarp forest of Kubah National Park with the sampling periods of nine days respectively to compare the diversity of non-volant small mammals and to study the post-capture behaviour of selected small mammals. One hundred cage traps were used throughout this study with bananas as baits. The scanning method was used to observe on the activity pattern of selected small mammals by using spools of thread and cyalume lightstick. A total of 42 individuals comprising four families and 14 species were captured. The dominant family was Muridae and most of the species captured was M. whiteheadi. Meanwhile, the home range for S. muelleri is 2450 m2. It is found that the observation on the movement of the rodents were not more than 40 metres from the released point. Presence of researchers during the observation period might limit the rodents to use the area freely thus effecting this study.
