Abstract

A study on species diversity of freshwater fishes was conducted at Matang Wildlife Centre and Gunung Gading National Park between 14 to 20 January and 1 to 6 April 2017. The main purpose of this study is to compare the species diversity between these two sites. A combination of passive and active methods were used, where a total of 40 traps which includes minnow trap and bubu (passive method) and six different sizes of scoop nets were used (active method) in collecting the fish samples from the study sites. A total of 2017 individuals from 18 species of fish and eight families were recorded from both sites. The Barbodes banksi and Rasbora sarawakensis were the most abundant species that managed to be caught and the family Cyprinidae has the most diverse species recorded. Based on the calculation of diversity t-test that have been done using the Estimates and Past software, it can be concluded that there is significant differences in the species diversity of freshwater fishes between Matang Wildlife Centre and Gunung Gading National Park.
