Abstract

A study on population density and habitat preferences ofJavan Myna, Acridotheres javanicus was conducted in selected urban areas in Kuching. A total of five areas which comprises of seven transect sites, each with a length of I kilometre was set up. The data were collected from October until December 2016. The observations were conducted in two sessions, 0700 until 1000 in the morning and 1600 until 1900 in the evening using a binocular and a range fmder. Roosting, foraging and nesting sites were recorded using Global Positioning System (GPS).The data collected were analysed using DISTANCE Software version 7.0. The observations on habitat preferences were tabulated using Microsoft Excel. The result showed that the highest density was in A6 (Emart Matang) with 90.93 ± 15.87 individualslkm2, followed by Al (Waterfront-Ajibah Abol-Satok) with 86.85 ± 19.57 individualslkm2 , A4 (Pending) with 81.94 ± 27.06 individualslkm2 , A3 (Jalan Song) with 71.78 ± 35.32 individuals/km2 , and lastly A2 (The Spring) with 18.19 ± 9.09 individualslkm2 . Rooftop recorded the highest number of individual for roosting site. For nesting site, underneath rooftop have the highest number of nests while for foraging site, ground recorded the highest individual.
