Abstract

The purpose of this research is to discuss the influence which the political situation in the Arab world exerts on contemporary installation art in the Arab world. The research focuses on Arabic installation art affected by the specific socio-economic and political environment in which it is created. This study examines the influence of the political and economic situation Arab artists experience and the ideas they project onto their work. The study sample consists of seven (7) contemporary installation artworks produced between 2000 and 2019. This study determines the influence of political situations on the idea of the installation art and discusses the political dimension in Arabic contemporary art based on Marcuse’s aesthetic theory, which focuses on the role of art in presenting the political and social issues. This study attempts to describe and analyze the artworks (study sample) and link the analysis to Marcuse’s theory and thus clarify the political dimension in Arabic contemporary art. It also attempts to determine the internal and external political factors that affect contemporary Arabic art by examining the political situation in the Arab world and analyzing a selection of Arabic contemporary artworks. This research mainly uses the qualitative research approach of analytical descriptive analysis. The study concludes that there is a definite impact of the political situation on the ideas reflected in contemporary Arabic art. Also proven is the relationship between art and the political reality based on Marcuse’s aesthetic theory, which is achieved through the evaluation of the results concluded from the study of the artworks along the main axes of Marcuse’s aesthetic theory. Lastly are determined the internal and external political factors that affect contemporary Arabic by examining the political situation in the Arab world and draw general conclusions based on the factors and the artworks. This study hopes to generate more general public interest in the contemporary art in the Arab world and for the Arabic art world to become more open to the contemporary art world.
