Abstract

study on species richness and abundance of freshwater shrimps between three different ages of reservoirs was conducted in Batang Ai (31 years), Bakun (6 years) and Murum (3 years). The study was also to determine the relationships between the abundance of freshwater shrimps and environmental conditions of the reservoirs. Five stations in each reservoir were studied, with five replicates of kick-net samples were collected from the littoral zones. Habitat assessment and water quality measurement were also carried out at each study site. A single species of freshwater shrimp, Macro brachium trompii recorded from Batang Ai and Bakun reservoirs, whereas none were recorded from Murum. Unpaired t-test showed a significant difference in abundance of M. trompii among the study sites (p < 0.05), and there are significant relationships between the abundance and water parameters. Results of the study may imply colonization of freshwater shrimp may be determined by many factors, yet the detail of the ecological processes cannot be ascertained here.
