Abstract

Vocal or acoustic signals are an essential tool in a bird's behavior. A study was conducted at Kubah National Park (frog pond), Sarawak to find out the vocalisation and call activity pattern of the Blue-eared barbet (Megalaima australis) by using an Automated Recording System (ARS). A device called Song Meter 3 (SM3) was used for the passive continuous recording method. The recording radius are about 50 meters and the duration was from 0600 hours (dawn) to 1800 hours (dusk). A sonogram was generated that showed a display of two types of calls which is a call "pleow pleow" and a song "tr-trrk". Vocalisation can be divided into two categories which is a call and a song. A call tends to be shorter and simpler, whereas, a song is more complex and can be produced for long hours. The call occurrence for the M. australis occurred the longest during mid-day from 1030 hours to 1430 hours. The call occurrences of the M australis are most active during breeding season and dry weather.
