Abstract

This study has evaluated the changes of leafs morphological and chemical properties due to environmental pollution. Four trees species namely F. microcarpa, C. iners, S. campanulatum and M elengi were used in this study.A total of 80 plants were randomly collected at UNIMAS and Kuching city. Fresh leaves were taken to laboratory for analysis. Three morphological and two chemical parameters: stomatal density, stomatal pore surface, relative chlorophyll content, relative water content and leaf extract pH were analyzed. Results showed difference responses from each species towards specific parameters that have been used. Level of tolerance in regards to the changes in stomatal characteristic of these species is M elengi> C. iners>S. campanulatum> F. microcarpa. M elengi is the most tolerant species compared to the other three species.Result reveals the tolerance level of these species after assessed with chemical parameters is F. microcarpa> C. iners> M elengi> S. campanulatum where F. microcarpa is the most tolerant species. This result confirmed the claims the tolerant level of plants towards pollutants are species depending and certain pollutants give more adverse effects to plants. Hence, those parameters used are assumed to be potentially good bio~indicators for urban habitat quality.
