Abstract
Currently, a few ongoing mega projects in Sarawak such as Pan Borneo Highway and second trunk road are constructed and might cross over on peat areas. Due to difficulties in obtaining undisturbed peat samples, the best possible way of doing peat strength test is via cone penetration test (CPT) According to the standards, at a penetration rate of 20 mm/s for CPT, it is expected to obtain strength in undrained condition for clay soil. However, based on past research, the standard penetration rate might occur at partial drained condition for peat. This thesis presents results from a series of variable penetration rates test on CPT for Kota Samarahan peat to assess the effect of drainage condition on the measured resistance (strength). The data presented in the form of ‘backbone’ curve where a ‘backbone’ curve provides a clear transition of drainage condition (drained, partially drained, undrained). It is found that higher penetration rate of 70 mm/s (for standard cone penetrometer probe) needs to be employed to achieve for undrained condition. The undrained shear strengths obtained from laboratory tests are correlated with the measured penetration resistance. Complimentary laboratory tests are conducted to determine the geotechnical properties of the studied peat. The methods to study consolidation are conventional oedometer and Constant Rate of Strain (CRS) test. Cα/Cc ratio are reported. Overall, the peat properties show that peat in this study is amorphous/sapric and is in the range of what reported in the previous research.
