Abstract

This study was carried out in November 2007, January and March 2008 to determine the water quality at green mussel area. There were two sampling stations with water samples collected at the surface water and at the mid water depth. There were 13 water quality parameters analyzed namely temperature, pH, DO, turbidity, salinity, ammonia-nitrogen, orthophosphate, nitrite, nitrate, silicate, TSS, chlorophyll-a and BOD5 Laboratory analysis was carried out according to HACH and APHA methods. Results for in-situ water quality parameters for both surface water and mid water depth within those 3 months ranged from 26.6 to 29.9°C for temperature, 6.45 to 7.97 for pH, 3.03 to 6.28 ppm for DO, 54 to 491 FTU for turbidity and 0.3 to 16 PSU for salinity. Nutrient analysis for both subsurface and mid water depth shows concentration ranged from 0.23 to 5.825 mg/L for ammonia-nitrogen, 0.03 to 0.48 mg/ L for orthophosphate, 0 to 0.028 mg/L for nitrite, 0 to 0.11 mg/L for nitrate and 3.025 to 6.772 mg/L for silicate. TSS ranged from 63 to 407 mg/L, 6.39 to 19.89 tg/L for chlorophyll a and 1.63 to 4.43 ppm for BOD5 Statistical analysis showed all the environmental parameters were not significantly different between stations. There were significant differences among months for both surface water and mid water depth except for silicate. This study showed the green mussel is able to tolerate to a wide range of environmental conditions.
