Abstract

This study was carried out to determine the species composition of puffer fish in Malaysian Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) of Sarawak Waters. A total of 215 individuals of puffer fish belonging to three families Tetraodontidae, Diodontidae and Ostraciidae were collected from 9 stations. The morphological measurement including total length, standard length, forked length, head length, head depth, min. body depth, max. body depth, eye width, pre orbital length, pre dorsal length, post dorsal length, pre pectoral length and pre anal length and meristic measurement such as dorsal fin rays, anal rays, pectoral fin rays and caudal fin rays were observed, counted and recorded. Length-weight relationship (LWR) and condition factor of puffer fish were also analyzed. The values of the exponent b in the length-weight relationships (LWRs) ranged from 2.39 to 9.45 with a mean of 5.50. The lowest mean condition factor, K was recorded in L. sceleratus (0.99 ± 0.05) while the highest value was observed in R. nasus (3.74 ± 0.88). This study has contributed to the knowledge of species composition of puffer fish in this economically important area that could assist fishery management scientists in carrying out future ecological studies
