Abstract

A study on distribution of benthic diatoms flora of selected rivers in Lundu area Sarawak, Malaysia was carried out in February 2017. Sampling of benthic diatoms were conducted at four stations selected along the Lundu route namely Sungai Batu, Sungai Sebuloh Besar, Sungai Sebemban and Sungai Tebero. Diatom samples were randomly collected from the stones/rocks surfaces which submerged at the bottom of the river and then preserved with Lugol’s solution. Diatom frustules were cleaned using Mr. Muscle, commercial drain cleaner that contain sodium hypochlorite and finally mounted with high refractive medium NaphraxÒ for making permanent slides. A total of 16 genera were found in this study. The most dominant benthic diatoms identified throughout the study were Achnanthes, Gomphonema and Navicula. The physico-chemical water parameters at each sampling stations were measured in range of 6.90 mg/L to 7.20 mg/L for dissolved oxygen (DO), 25.0 °C to 27.4 °C for temperature, 6.31 to 6.80 for pH and 7.74 µS/cm to 24.17 µS/cm for conductivity. The correlation between physico-chemical parameters of the water and the percentage of occurrence for each diatom genus was analyzed by using Pearson’s Correlation (a= 0.05).
