Abstract

This thesis presents the study of wall-diaphragm connections of unreinforced masonry buildings in Malaysia. Unreinforced masonry buildings happens to be vulnerable in resisting seismic activities because of lacking with the positive anchorage system. In present, there are huge numbers of unreinforced masonry buildings that still exists in the commercial area. Even though Malaysia is categorized as low seismicity region, the effects of the earthquake originating from inter-plate boundary between the Eurasian and Philippines Sea Plates on the east have been felt in Malaysia and records shown several moderate earthquakes that frequently occur in Indonesia but has affected Malaysia. In accordance with this situation, an experimental study on evaluating the bolted connection strength of Selangan Batu wood was initiated, attributable to lack of laboratory data on bolted timber connection. Selangan Batu wood was selected to be the materials to perform a series of test because it is commonly used to construct the structural elements of a roof and noor diaphragms of the unreinforced masonry buildings in Kuching city. Properties and basic parameters of Selangan Batu hardwood were investigated by identifying its moisture content, density and embedding strength test for the purpose of predicting the values of bolted connection strength in Row Shear Model and European Yield Model equations. Three groups of timber specimen with different connection configurations were tested and all the experimental results for bolted connection strength were compared with the code of practice for timber joints in Malaysia (MS 544: Part 5: 2001), European Yield Model, and Row Shear Model. A combination of European Yield Model equations with Row Shear Model equation is recommended to assess the bolted connection strength of unrein forced masonry buildings in Malaysia.
