Abstract

This study evaluates the critical parameters of horizontal slope drainage by using drain envelopes, pipe envelope and filter materials. The main focus in this study is to improve the effectiveness of the drainage system in slope by performing an experiment on a horizontal drain model. The installation of drain and pipe envelopes in horizontal drain is investigated. The model box with dimensions of 25 cm width, 25 cm height and 56 cm length is installed with a 25 mm diameter with 60 cm of HDPE pipe with a slope of 5o from horizontal. The water from the rain simulator is introduced into the model box. There are four experiments conducted to investigate the effectiveness of the drain envelopes to horizontal slope drain. From the experiment performed, it can be concluded that partial circumference pipe enveloped with geotextile and quarry gravel acts as filter material in the sand layer discharged higher percentage of water than full circumference pipe which is 48.37% from the amount of water introduced. In term of sediment produced in discharged water, full circumference of pipe and caging enveloped with geotextile and quarry gravel acts as filter material has minimum sediment produced which is 0.553 g. This proves that the usage of geotextile and quarry gravel help to reduce the sediment produced in the horizontal slope drainage.
