Abstract

A parametric study of an embankment on soft soils reinforced with stone columns is performed using a computer program based on the finite element method. The stone column is choose as one of the best improvement methods of embankment on soft soils, especially in order to increase the stability of embankments in highway, big way, rail way and soil structures. The stone column into soft soils improves strengthen parameters against settlement and high displacements with increasing the bearing capacity, stability and flexibility of the embankment. On the other hand, installation of stone column in very soft soils faces to some limitations and the soft soil particles may clog into the stones column successfully. So, further development in stone column installation is reinforcing the columns with geosynthetics or geogrids. In this study, two-dimensional finite element program (PLAXIS 8.2 Software) is use to simulate the behaviour of un-encased versus geogrid encased stone column in soft clay. The two condition of embankment reinforced with ordinary stone columns (un-encased) in compare with the geogrid encased stone columns are analysis using two-dimensional finite element program (PLAXIS 8.2 Software). In this study, the finite element method (FEM) program Plaxis 2D is developed to analyse the settlement, excess pore pressure and consolidation behaviour of embankment on soft soil reinforced with ordinary stone columns in compare with the geogrid encased stone columns. The different output been generated by two-dimensional finite element program (PLAXIS 8.2 Software) for embankment reinforced with ordinary stone columns in compare with the encased stone columns with geogrid materials are presented and discussed in this study.
