Abstract

With rapid growth of population and number of registered vehicles, number or road users keep on increasing from time to time which leads to traffic congestion. Therefore, traffic signal is installed especially on intersection to maximize traffic efficiency and safety by separating conflicting traffic movement. However, existing traffic signal operating do not have a proper information system that can be used for monitoring traffic operation and future planning of road transportation system. Geographic Information System (GIS) is a computerized based management system used to capture, manage, store, query, display, and analyze all types of geographically referenced data. Global Positioning System allowed the users to identify a location with accuracy. Application of geographic information System (GIS) in traffic signal operational system has a number effects where data of performance of the intersection can be accessed and usable to road users and for future planning to improve the performance of signalized intersections. The location of study includes four traffic signals which are UNIMAS traffic signal, Summer Mall traffic signal, Farley Supermarket traffic signal, and Riveria traffic signal. Data are obtained from traffic study conducted at each traffic signal and analyzed by using SIDRA Intersection 5.1 software. Information then stored in a form in raster data form and used for mapping by using ArcGIS 10.2 software. This traffic signal operational system information can be developed and have capabilities to store information on daily operation which is useful for future planning.
