Abstract

Large amount of wastewater produced by industries contained varying amount of oil which is hannful if it is release directly to the streams and rivers. In this study, residual oil in palm oil mill effluent (POME) collected from local oil mill was removed using surfactants. The surfactant chosen in this study is Brij 58 which is non-ionic surfactant. n-hexane was used as solvent in oil extraction process as comparison. Parameters observed throughout this study were concentration of surfactant, mixing speed and ratio of POME to surfactant. Critical micelle concentration (CMC) was also determined in order to identify optimum concentration of Brij 58 to remove residual oil. The results showed the optimum concentration for the removal of residual oil in POME is 0.007 mM with optimum mixing speed of 150 rpm at ratio of POME to surfactant 2: I. The amount of residual oil removed at optimum conditions was 0.081 g. Biodegradation of PO ME and Brij 58 showed positive towards bacteria Bacillus subttlis as both solutions turned to cloudy solution. For qualitative analysis of oil and grease, the bonding in extracted oil was analysed and confinned using Fourier Transfonn Infrared (FTIR). FT-IR spectrum of residual oil removed from POME showed obvious decrease in intensity of C=O bonding.
