Abstract
Thousands of people around the country in Malaysia are greatly affected by natural disasters every year and the impact can be catastrophic and has its adverse effects. The natural disasters in Malaysia are occurring more frequently than in the past and it happened very quickly and all of a sudden. However, current natural disasters monitoring systems available are not cost effective and sensors technology for early warning monitoring system still are not fully developed in Malaysia. Not only have that, till today, not many warning alert existed beyond weather forecasts, which are unreliable and nonspecific. It is unreliable because these warnings are associated with a relatively high false alarm rate as the sensors used do not consider the environmental perturbations which could affect the measurement of the sensor and nonspecific due to lack of exact location of the disaster, severity of the disaster and temporal evolution. Natural Disasters Remote Monitoring System is a solution to solve these problems stated before as this system is an easy to use and also cost efficient. This system will focus on frequently occurred disasters in Malaysia which are floods, fires and landslides where the system will monitor and alert the users with early warnings through an android applications and Short Message Services (SMS) alert. Identification of important measurement parameters and the sensors design program of the system need to be performed to show the functions of the Natural Disasters Remote Monitoring System. Type of sensors and microcontroller must be identified and also the firmware and coding for sensors need to be determined. The hardware prototype, firmware and sensors coding need to be tested in the laboratory and onsite and troubleshoot any problems encountered. All the data and information of the monitoring system will be stored and can be used for research in the near future and for improvement and development purposes.
