Abstract

The aim of this study to investigate the effects of butylal-diesel fuel blend, using 10% v/v and 20% v/v on the emissions and performance characteristics. Preparation of the fuel blends are by using simple mix and shake because of butylal property of full miscibility in diesel. Using a single cylinder four-stroke, direct injection and naturally aspirated diesel engine testbed, the tests performed by changing engine speed from 1200 rpm, 1700 rpm and 2200 rpm. Parameters to be measured includes CO, NOx and EGT for emissions, while torque, power, fuel consumption and air flow for performance. Analysis showed that butylaldiesel blend is capable in reducing CO emission and BSCF performance, effectively with high engine speed, though NOx emission is visibly increased due to high engine temperature. Other than that, butylal-diesel blends improve the power output with increasing engine speed, but the torque lowered for the same condition.
