Abstract

This era has witness remarkable achievements in green technology in the field of material science through the development of biocomposites. These achievements were driven by the environment and sustainability issues. Researchers and scientists around the world are developing high-performance materials made from natural resources. The challenges in working with natural fibre reinforced plastic composites are their large variation in properties and characteristics. A biocomposite’s properties are influenced by variables such as the fibre type, environmental conditions of the fibre, processing methods, and any modifications of the fibre. The overall characteristics of reinforcing fibre used in biocomposites, including type, structure, composition as well as mechanical properties will be reviewed. Furthermore, the modification methods in term of chemical treatment will be discussed. In this project, the matrices in biofibre reinforced composites based on petrochemical and renewable resources will also be addressed. Moreover, the types of weave such as plain weave and unidirectional pattern of the natural fibre are also explained on how it can affect the mechanical properties of the biocomposite. This paper aim to introduce coconut leaves fibre used as a natural reinforcement of the matrix which is polypropylene. The procedures of preparing the coconut leaves fibre and fabricating the biocomposite are as well being discussed. The cross-sectional area, density, water absorption, and tensile properties of these composites are determined experimentally under similar conditions and compared. Finally, the review will conclude with the finding of the experiment of this project as well as key issues that need to be addressed and resolved.
