Abstract

A study was conducted to evaluate (he effecls of shori period of accelerated ageing and ~t ro e 011 the gennination of two maturilies of Cap~icum annuwn L. seeds. The seeds were placed in desiccators 10 age for 0,24,48,72,96 and 120 hours at 40 - 42° C and 100% relative humidlty. After accelerated ageing, seeds Were put in refrigerators (3 - SOC) and ambient room (28 - 300 e) for 0,1,2,3,4 and 5 weeks. Ge nl1iuiltlOD of aged seeds lor M:nu , rity I d~ reased gradually after 48 hours and conllJ1ued to decrease until 120 hours o f ageing. Hnwcver, the 24 hours of accelerated ageing had the effect of increased germinlHloll pcrce ntJ gt: a~ compared to 0 hour of ageing. Also for MZltUflty 2, lhc germinatioll of aged s(:cus (; ;;a cd gradua lly after 48 hours and it continued to drop until 120 hours of agein g. The 24 hours of aCc~k ll!d Jge illg had the cnee l of increased germination percen t')g-.: as compared to (j hour of age-ing. Differ-':Jlt \..': Il ~)\' ~l1t s in \'al) ' ing temperatures of storing seeds gave different resuils in percentage of seed genlllnatlOlI. Sec:d s ...; [mea In refrigerator performed belter than the seeds stored in ambient room for Matun ry 1 and I\ lantrity 2 . Gennination percentage of aged seeds decreased with muease III the period of :lgcmg, and storage . Reg.rcssioll analysis predicted that aged C. ol/I/uum seeds of Maturity 1 can be stored for 9 weeks anti Maturity 2 fo r 18 weeks in refrige rator. For ambient room, Mat1.1fity I can be stored for 8 weeks and Maturity 2 for 12 weeks.
