Abstract
This study was done to study the effectiveness of orientation program in the socialising process of workers in public and private sectors. The objective of this study was to identify the effectiveness of orientation programs that help workers in socialisation process in a new organisation. This study also observed the perceptual differences between the public sector and private sector in the effective levels of orientation program. Beside that, the study also aimed to identify if there were significant differences between workers' perception in public and private sector based on demographic characteristics (e. g. gender, marital status, age and education level). In addition, it also looks at identifying the perceptual difference between public sector and private sector in the level of importance towards the orientation program carried out in their organisation. Respondents consisted of 40 workers from a public organisation and 40 workers from two private organisations that were randomly chosen. Instrument used in this study was a questionnaire. Findings showed that respondent's perception in public sector towards the effectiveness level of orientation program were at a moderate level (28 respondents or 70%). The effectiveness level in private sector also was at moderate level (23 respondents or 57.5%). Thus, the results did not show any perceptual differences between public sector and private sector towards the effectiveness level of orientation program in their organisation. The detailed indicators of the socialisation process in orientation program found that the human relation indicator in public and private sector were at low level with 35 respondents (87.5%) in public sector and 38 respondents (92.5%) in private sector. In addition the private sector also showed that the organisations cultural and norm indicator were at moderate and low level with balance respondents (20 respondents or equal to 50%). However, the results did not show any significant differences between perception based on gender, marital status, age and education in public and private sector. The results also showed that the respondents from public sector (34 respondents or 85%) and private sector (38 respondents or 95%) viewed orientation programs to be at a low importance.
