Abstract

The main purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between intellectual property rights (IPR), foreign direct investment (FDI), research and development (R&D), and gross domestic products per capita (GDP) in ASEAN 5 countries from the period of 2001 quarter 1 to 2010 quarter 4. Panel analysis is applied in this study. The sources of data are extracted from World Bank and index of patent rights which developed by Ginarte and Park (2008). This research adopted Panel unit root tests, Panel cointegration test and Panel causality test as the research methodologies. The findings of this study identified that the independent variables such as IPR, FDI and R&D and GDP were granger causes each other in ASEAN 5 countries. There are two bidirectional relationships were found in this study which between IPR and R&D and between GDP and IPR in the estimated model while FDI and R&D are the most significant variables in this short run relationship.
