Abstract

This project was aimed to synthesize and characterize the a,p-conjugated Schiff base compounds in order to replace the similar structure compound of 2-phenylpyridine for the complexation with copper metal. The compounds were derived from the simple condensation reactions of cinnamaldehyde with aniline (1) and 4-methoxycinnamaldehyde with 4 methoxyaniline (2) in cyclohexane and ethanol respectively. Both compounds were characterized using FfIR, UV-Vis, 'H NMR and GC-MS. A doublet signal present at around 8.30 ppm in IH NMR and a sharp band observed at around 1623.88 cm- 1 in FTlR spectrum indicate the presence of imine moiety (H-C=N) in compound (1) and (2). Both compounds were underwent complexation reaction with CuCh·2H20 and characterized by FTIR, UV-Vis, IH NMR and X-ray crystallography (4). The IH NMR spectra of both compounds (3) and (4) showed significant downfield shifting but the number of protons present for both compound does not matches with their corresponding free ligand compound. X-ray crystallography result showed the unexpected structure of pyrazine-1 ,4-diium was formed.
