Abstract
Nomophobia is considered as a modern age phobia introduced in our lives as a byproduct of the interaction between human beings and new mobile communication technologies, especially smartphones. Many studies more focus on investigating the sources of nomophobia and still questioning about its impacts on human beings. Currently, no study was found to test the relationship between nomophobia with work-life balance and work performance aspects especially in a formal organization setting. Therefore, the present study intends to address the gaps in existing past research through investigation on the relationship of nomophobia with work life balance work-family conflict, family-work conflict, work-family enrichment, familywork enrichment, work demand and work performance among civil servants working in eight organizations in the north region of Malaysia. This study also attempts to investigate two moderation effects namely gender (male and female), and generation (baby boomer, X and Y). A quantitative approach was utilized and after initial data screening, 250 out of 286 responses were analysed using AMOS software for Structural Equation Modeling (SEM). The results revealed statistically significant direct relationships of nomophobia, on work-life balance aspects except for family-work enrichment. In multi-group analysis, there were distinctions between the moderating effect of both gender and generation on various aspect of work life balance and work performance. In conclusion, this research offers a novel perspective in work life-balance and work performance areas especially in a developing country like Malaysia.
