Abstract
Dendrocalamus giganteus and D. asper are among the species of bamboo having good physical and strength properties. There are can be found in logged over forest, primary forest, river banks and hill sides. Systematic characterization of these properties would help to determine the right bamboo to ensure their superior quality in terms of utilization in bamboo industry. The objectives of this study are to examine, evaluate, and compare the physical and mechanical properties with respect to height level of both D. giganteus and D. asper. The D. giganteus and D. asper culms were studied and sampled according to the each portion. Results showed the basic density of the top portions of the both culms (D. giganteus ID. asper) was significantly higher (475 kg/m3/460 kg/m3) than middle (445 kg/m3/443 kg/m3) and bottom (359 kg/m3/356 kg/m ). Moisture content of the bottom portion for the both species (D. giganteus ID. asper) was significantly higher (179%/182%) than middle (124%/126%), top (112%/128%). Static bending test showed the modulus of rupture (MOR) for top portion of D. giganteus was significantly higher (341 MPa) than middle (115 MPa), top (160 MPa). While for D. asper culm MOR recorded no significant different among portions. Modulus of elasticity (MOE) of the both species (D. giganteus /D. asper) showed the top portion was significantly higher (12748 MPa/15318 MPa) than middle (8680 MPa/13967 MPa), top (12748 MPa/15138 MPa). Compression stress of the compression parallel to grain for the top portion of D. giganteus culm was significantly higher (76 Mpa) than middle (46 MPa), bottom (76 MPa). While for D. asper culm compression stress has no significant difference among portions. As conclusion, the mechanical properties of the top portion D. giganteus culm is significantly higher than the lower portions.
