Abstract
In the civil engineering point of view, soil erosion can be defined as a transitioning of soil particles position that is caused by water and wind source. It is essentially the smoothing process of soil grains, where these grains are transported and deposited by the force of water, wind, and gravity. Soil erosion rate and sediment yield are assessed for a construction site of proposed concrete batching facility located at Bintulu, Sarawak for the period of before construction and during construction phase. The obtained results have shown that the soil erosion rate and sediment yield during construction are higher than before construction due to exposed surface of soil during site clearing and earthworks. Subsequently, the construction site is re-assessed with included soil erosion, runoff, and sediment controlling measures. The re-evaluated results have indicated that soil erosion rate and sediment yield for the period of during construction has been significantly reduced. Therefore, the controlling measures are effective in reducing soil erosion rate and capturing sediment on the construction site. An erosion and sediment control plan (ESCP) is also proposed for the construction project to recommend Best ~.i Management Practices (BMPs) control measures to mitigate soil erosion impact onto the environment. Finally, further research is recommended on the factors of soil erosion rate and sediment yield for Malaysian climate and condition, due to insufficient information for local condition required to determine the factors In RUSLE and MUSLE equations.
