Abstract

Kacangma (Leonurus sibiricus and Leonurus japonicus) is one of the famous local traditional herbs in Malaysia, especially in Sarawak. This herb is an annual or biennial herbaceous and classified into Laimiaceae mint family. L. sibiricus and L .japonicus are not much different in aspect of vegetative characteristics; however, the growth of the white-flowered species (L.japonicus) is much better compared to pink-flowered species (L. sibiricus). Kacangma involved in various studies and this study interest in the breeding system and antibacterial properties of kacangma. In artificial pollination test, it showed that the kacangma is self-pollinated plant due to high sucess percentage in self pollination. However, kacangma still can be cross-pollinated and no apomictic. Besides, pollen viability test is conducted through the in vitro germination. In the present study, the no germination of pollen tube is showed from all floral development stages and probably due to the culture media (agar) used for incubation pollen longetivity. In particular investigation of effect antibacterial activity on methanol crude extracts of kacangma, there is no inhibition zone determined. The result can be improved by increasing the concentration of crude extracts of L. sibiricus and L. japonicus.
