Abstract

This research describes the trends of the independent music industry in Malaysia. It can be seen that the Malaysia music industry is growing slowly and making an impact towards the society and country in the 21st century. No doubt there are a number of main music label companies, some artists still prefer to rely on their own. By carrying out a qualitative analysis, this paper will be analyzing independent music as a part of the creative industry sector in Malaysia, the context and background conditions of the industry and not forgetting, identifying the challenges faced when it comes to pursuing as an independent musician in Malaysia. This will enlighten where independent music stand among the society in the Malaysian local music scene and show how Malaysian independent artists and bands are managing themselves in the art scene. Hence, strategies and recommendations are highlighted in order to improve the independent music sector as a part of Malaysia’s art and culture. Also, this research contributes to enhancing the development of Malaysia’s creative industry.
