Abstract

In order to explore the competitiveness of palm oil industry in Malaysia and Indonesia, this study discusses the comparative advantage and export diversification of 20 palm oil products in Malaysia as well as Indonesia during the period of 1989 to 2010. Two methods are employed in this study, namely Revealed Comparative Advantage (RCA) measurement and export diversification measurement. The results show that Malaysia and Indonesia have comparative advantage in production for most of the palm oil products. On the other hand, the export diversification index for both countries is unstable during the empirical period. Nevertheless, in general, Malaysia is more diversified in export structure for the 20 palm oil products compare to Indonesia. Both countries need to enhance its research and development (R&D) activities in palm oil related industries so as to gain more trade value from the comparative advantage as palm oil producer.
